As a result of objections from Alley Cat Allies and its supporters, the DC Council removed a cat licensing provision from a bill amending the District’s animal
control laws. The bill, which the DC Council passed on Tuesday, July 15, includes a provision spelling out that animal control “shall promote” the use of Trap-Neuter-Return.

Community Comes Together to Protect Feral Cats in Richmond, VA
The Fox affiliate in Richmond, WRLH-TV, contracted with a pest control company to eradicate a colony of feral cats who made their home on station property. Three cats were trapped
and killed, and many more remained in harms way when the company brought bulldozers on site to eliminate the cats’ homes. Alley Cat Allies issued a press
release and offered our help to the Richmond SPCA in negotiating with the company, which was not allowing local rescuers to humanely trap and move the cats to safety.
Now the operator of Critter Control, the pest control company – Keith Copi – is facing up to a year in jail on each of three charges of unnecessarily killing feral cats.
Copi is charged under animal-cruelty statutes that make it illegal to kill any animal unnecessarily.
The good news is that the community of rescuers came together to protect the rest of the cats who will be trapped, spayed or neutered, and either returned or adopted depending upon
temperament and age. If you are interested in fostering or helping in some other way contact SOS.

in the current American Bar Association’s Animal Law Committee Newsletter. Read the full article here.

National Poll Reveals Americans' Humane Ethic
A national survey conducted by Harris for ACA reveals that an overwhelming majority of Americans — 81% — believes that leaving a stray cat outside to live out his life
is more humane than having the cat caught and killed. These results reveal a significant disparity between the public’s humane ethic and the operating policy of most U.S. animal
pounds and shelters. Click to read the Public
Opinion Poll or the Press Release.
